NeckRide.org is Sponsoring Free Transportation for the "2010 Down on the Farm" event

Down on the Farm will be different this year. You will be able to see how one of the many Northern Neck wineries makes its wine. Or get to pet some baby calves. There will be wagon rides and a beekeeping exhibition. Fresh produce. All sorts of activities for children.

But best of all, this year, for the first time, you won't have to drive from one farm to another if you don't want to! Just park your car at Rappahannock Community College in Warsaw, and NeckRide will drive you everywhere.

Buses will be stopping every fifteen minutes or so at Sabine Hall, at the Tidewater Dairy Farm, at Garner's Produce, at Belle Mount Vineyards, and at the Rappahannock Community College's parking lot in Warsaw.

Just think about it: You don't have to waste money on gas. And if you ride the bus, you'll get a free t-shirt, while supplies last. So remember, May 29th, from nine to two, let NeckRide take you around from farm to farm. Share the ride!

It's Not All About Efficiency

In the "Roanoke Times," Jeremy Holmes---the Program Director of RIDE Solutions at the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission---writes about the importance of reducing Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). "Real energy independence," he concludes, "will come not just with more efficient vehicles, but a more efficient transportation system through reduced VMT." Read More >

Fun With Carpools

The average American driver spends 80 minutes a day in front of the wheel. If only one passenger were added to each circulating car, 32 million gallons of gas---a day!---would be saved. These were some of the numbers offered by a "Today Goes Green" segment of MSNBC's Today Show, whose members tried carpooling to work one day to see how it worked. Watch It >

Northern Neck Commerce Suffers During Bridge Repair

After the collapse of a bridge in Minnesota earlier this year, and the subsequent inspection of similar bridges across the United States, one such structure---connecting White Stone with Topping, across the Rappahannock River---was closed to heavy traffic for repairs: the Norris Bridge. Many delivery trucks have seen their trips extended by as much as two hours.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has banned traffic to all vehicles above 3 tons on the bridge, forcing most commercial traffic to follow an 85-mile detour via Warsaw on Route 3, Tappahannock on Highway 360 and U.S. 17 in the Middle Peninsula.

Repairs were expected to take about a month and involved the replacement of one of 168 pins connecting the bridge's trusses.
